Best Neurodiversity Affirming Picture Book for Kids at Halloween

Oct 15, 2024

It's that time of year! Halloween is right around the corner, but many kids don't like the spooky or scary that often comes with the holiday. So, if you're looking for a great book that isn't scary and that affirms neurodiversity, Bitsy Bat, School Star is a great option! Since this isn't a book specifically about Halloween (but still fits the theme because of the cute bats) it's readable and relevant year round!!

Bitsy Bat isn't quite like the other animals in her new school. But, that's okay! She still finds a way to shine even if she doesn't "fit in."

One of the unique and exciting features of this book is that the author and illustrator, Kaz Windness, is autistic. At the end of the story she introduces herself and explains neurodiversity and autism in a simple and straightforward way. This offers a seamless opportunity for parents and teachers to introduce and discuss neurodiversity and differences in a highly affirming way for children.
